Midford Castle
A Part of History
Midford Castle is a grade one listed folly castle. It was designed by John Carter and built for Henry Roebuck in 1775. According to local folklore, the money used to build the castle was won with the Ace of Clubs in a card game. It’s believed that this led to the castle’s unique club floorplan design. However, the grand entrance or “stalk” of the Ace of Clubs was actually added some 40 years later by the Connolly family of Castletown, who also built the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and outbuildings on the grounds.
The Castle Today
Scott Adams, whose business Nutrisport (est 1988) is in wellness, fitness and sports nutrition, bought Midford Castle from Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage in 2009. Fifty years of unsympathetic restoration, poor heating and bodged repairs with unsuitable non-traditional materials had taken its toll on the buildings and fixtures which were crumbling and leaking from top to bottom.
Scott started sympathetic restoration of the Castle and Estate using traditional techniques, materials and expert craftsmanship, which is now largely complete. Heating and power is now sourced from sustainable, carbon neutral Biomass and Solar. The Castle has been home to Scott and his 7 children, the Nutrisport Trust (educational charity), and more recently for 3 refugee families from Kharkiv, Ukraine.
He has now lovingly restored the outbuildings (The Priest, The Chapel and The Stables) and the Castle’s Vaults, and they are now available as some of Bath’s most unique, luxury holiday stays.
